If you have used a dating app, been set up on a blind date or found yourself getting drinks with that stranger who hit on you at Trader Joe’s then you may find yourself in one of the following situations. A DatingAdvice.com survey last year said that 43 percent of Americans have been on a blind date. A survey of 1,000 Americans and Europeans found that most people would choose a coffee shop or restaurant as the place to meet that special someone. 2bites asked a few millennial daters* about some of their most awkward first date encounters and the best spots for a first-time rendezvous.
Audrey, 23, Chicago
“I had an awkward first date with a guy I met on Hinge. We made plans super late on a Friday to get coffee the next day and I assumed we meant Sunday since it was past midnight! Then, Saturday morning he texted me “I’m at the coffee shop” when I was still in bed WITH ANOTHER BOY. So I told him I would be late and ended up being 2 hours late to get coffee with him.

Matt, 23, Los Angeles
So I went on a date maybe about a month ago and it went ok. She seemed cool but I just didn’t really feel like I wanted anything more. And when we walked back to our cars I went in to hug her and say bye but she went in for the kiss. We both pulled out from the hug and we both kinda muttered something and then she went in again and I ended up giving her a little peck that someone would give their grandma. The whole way home I was sure that she wouldn’t text me again but she did and wanted to hang out again but I said thanks but no thanks.

Max, 25, Los Angeles/Columbus
6 months ago I had met this guy on Tinder and we had been texting for a while. He was from Ohio. I’m from Ohio. All of the sudden he started asking me about a couple people that I had known in Columbus and he brought up one specific guy who I don’t necessarily have a great relationship with and who is also a porn star. I kind of disparaged the career a bit because I don’t like the kid, not necessarily that I don’t like porn stars. After that conversation happened things got really weird. He stopped talking, he just shut down and he didn’t have any interest in anything. … Five months later I come across a video of the same guy. Basically, I slammed the porn industry and the porn stars unknowing that the guy I was with was also a porn star. That was why he completely was turned off and that’s why we’ve never spoken again. Probably one of the most awkward things that have ever happened in my life.
Marie, 23, Columbus
There was a time where I was totally sitting and waiting for a guy on a date for like 10 minutes and it was so awkward. I thought he was going to stand me up. By the time the guy got there, the bartender had already bought me a drink.
